»»Global Destination Cities Index: London Ranks First

London once again is the top global destination, according to the MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities.
The UK’s capital ranked first in both sub-indexes, international visitor arrivals — the number of total international visitor arrivals — and cross-border spending — expenditures by these same visitors in the destination cities –, included in the MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities.

London topped the visitor arrivals ranking with 16.9 million inbound passengers expected in 2012. Second in that ranking comes Paris with 16 million inbound passengers expected in 2012.

Coming to cross-border spending, London with US$21.1 billion in estimated expenditures for 2012 is first, just ahead of New York which is expected to hit US$19.4 billion for 2012.

Asian cities ranked highly in the Global Destination Cities Index, with eight of the top 20 cities by international arrival that were from Asia Pacific — Bangkok ranked third with 12.2 million visitors expected in 2012, just ahead Singapore, fourth with 11.8 million visitors, as Hong Kong ranked sixth with 11.1 million visitors.

When it comes to the fastest growth in visitor arrivals, six out of the top 20 fastest growing cities were from Asia Pacific. Rio de Janeiro was first in this ranking with a 28.6% expected growth in visitor arrivals in 2012, Tokyo was second with a 21.5% growth.

Asia Pacific cities also ranked highly in terms of visitor spending: Bangkok ranked third — US$19.3 billion expected in 2012 (+ 16.6% from 2011), Singapore fifth (+ 12.7% from 2011) and Seoul tenth (+ 16.2% from 2011).
