Air passengers will get more information on lengthy ground delays. The Star-Telegram writes: “airlines will soon be giving travelers more information on lengthy tarmac delays“.

Under the new standards, the airlines will report the complete time planes spend on the ground even if a flight has been canceled or diverted or if it temporarily stops at a gate to let passengers off.

The newspaper quoted Transportation Secretary Mary Peters saying “Passengers should know whether it will take as long for their flight to get to the runway as it will to land at their destination“.

According to the Transportation Department, just 270 flights experienced long ground delays for more than three hours from January to April 2008, with most of them concentrated at airports with chronic delay problems. One the worst performers is John F. Kennedy Airport in New York with 16 of the 20 flights with the longest tarmac delays in August.
