»»Southwest To Add Service to Minneapolis/St. Paul
Low-cost carrier Southwest announced it would add service to Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP).
Southwest’s presence in Minneapolis/St. Paul will add competition to a local market dominated by Northwest Airlines — MSP is home to Northwest Airlines and one of its most protected hubs.

Pioneer Press writes: “Southwest is stepping into a Chicago-Midway route that had been fiercely competitive until AirTran Airways abandoned it earlier this year. Airfares between the Twin Cities and Chicago, which had been as low as $100 round-trip, started to rise as soon as AirTran exited.”
The Texas-based discount carrier will start Chicago-MSP service on a still-to-be-determined date.
AviationWeek says that in MSP, Southwest will operate from one of the 10 vacant gates at the airport’s Humphrey terminal.
