»»Major Airlines To Test In-flight Wireless Internet Service

Many airlines are ready to test wireless Internet service.
American Airlines expects to have a test plane operating by December and its whole transcontinental fleet of 767s ready in 2008.

Virgin America is expected to equip every seat back with high-speed capability by mid-2008. This airline also plans to integrate broadband into its existing seat-back entertainment system on all its Airbus A320s so that passengers wouldn’t even need to bring a computer.
Alaska Airlines will run a test next spring.

However, the major US carriers are watching these experiments closely, as surveys show that as many as 70 percent of passengers want wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) and would be willing to switch airlines for it.

Boeing started to test a similar service called Connexion, which several airlines used in 2004, but in August 2006, it discontinued the service, saying the market they’d hoped for hadn’t materialized. However lately technology has improved, so it seems the right time for in-flight wireless Internet service to be successful. (source)
